Marks & Spencer, Sheffield

Marks & Spencers is one of the biggest supermarket brands in the UK. It has made a major commitment to sustainability, aiming to become fully carbon neutral by 2013. As part of these goals, its Sheffield branch sought a 100% LED lighting system.

Not only are all the new light fittings highly energy-efficient, but an intelligent control system saves even more electricity. Light sensors detect the amount of daylight coming in through the windows, dimming the luminaires automatically so that a constant level of light is achieved. The fittings can even be programmed to be switched off together as daylight takes over.

Philips Bring To Life "The Toffee Factory"

Abandoned in the 1950’s, this disused toffee factor was destined for demolition until Newcastle City Council decided to convert it into high-end office space. But how could a dull eyesore be used to attract new businesses to the area?

"With its dull Victorian brickwork, the Toffee factor was direly in need of some color, so Philips added ColorGraze and ColorReach linear floodlighting around the four arches of the factory and landmark chimney. These fixtures use an RGB system that can produce virtually any color in the spectrum. With light shining up from the edge of the walls, the building now glows with vibrant colors that can be seen from miles away.

The lights are controlled with Philips PowerControl system, which is programmed to provide dynamic color changing effects. The system enables the colors to be changed as often as needed, and their brightness can be dimmed from maximum to nothing. Flexible control means that the building owners can easily change the lighting for special occasions.

Comprehensive
LED solutions

for petrol stations not only help to reduce the costs of energy consumption in a place that is open 24 hours a day, but they also allow for using light as a feature that will encourage customers to do their shopping in a well-lit place and to attract their attention to the products on sale. Professional lighting solutions provide safe and comfortable conditions for motorists, while emphasising and reinforcing the petrol station’s brand”.

Morrisons had several aims in mind for the new gas station lighting. Not only was it important to create a bright, refreshing ambience while reducing energy costs, but the lights needed to be highly durable. With the petrol stations being open 24 hours a day, it was important to minimize any need for maintenance.

The Meir Tunnel Stoke-on-Trent

The Meir tunnel was in need of some innovative illumination. Its old lighting system, which was made up of fluorescent and high pressure sodium lights, was energy-inefficient and prone to failures. Modern lighting was needed to minimize disruptions to tunnel traffic.

Measuring 248 meters, the Meir tunnel required reliable lighting in order to guarantee driver safety. The previous lighting system had been installed to comply with an old regulation standard, but the luminaires were underperforming, causing regular disruptions.

Philips T-line LED luminaires were the light at the end of the tunnel. They were chosen by the highway contractor due to their excellent environmental performance, quality of light, and long life cycle. The decision was made to strip out the old system and install 600 T-line fixtures. The new system would use two versions of the luminaire to provide a linear lighting scheme. This would mean that if one were ever to fail, it would have little impact on the overall lighting.

The LED technology now provides numerous benefits. LED lighting delivers instant start-up following a power failure, eliminating the potentially dangerous cool-down period required for high pressure sodium lamps. Furthermore, the LED light sources are less susceptible to low ambient temperatures, which can significantly reduce the lumen output of fluorescent lamps.

Lighting the boulevard in Littlehaven

The creation of a new promenade and sea wall at Littlehaven in South Shields has made highly effective use of lighting to create a greater sense of place and enhance the experience for people using the amenities.

From the early stages of the project a decision was taken to make use of the latest LED lighting technologies to take advantage of their controllability, energy efficiency and long life time. “It was clear that LED lighting would meet our criteria for reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions and life cycle costs while enabling us to make use of color changing effects,” explained the Council’s Head of Development Services George Mansbridge.
